NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. (ADAMS) – A barricaded suspect is now hospitalized with serious injuries after being shot by police in North Manchester. Indiana State Police say North Manchester police officers were called to the home around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and shut down State Road 13 from Market to East streets for hours.
37-year-old Jacob Slocum allegedly fired at police who entered the home before they returned fire. Fort Wayne police say Slocum was a suspect in an armed robbery that happened Monday at a Meijer store there.
The Fort Wayne Police Department released the following:
On Monday, December 2nd, 2024, officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department were dispatched a possible armed robbery at 6309 Lima Rd, Meijers Grocery Store.
Information provided was that the Loss Prevention Officers working at Meijers had attempted to stop a male who was pushing out a cart of unpaid merchandise. The male, later identified as Jacob Slocum, exited the store and when an off duty Indiana State Police officer attempted to get Slocum to stop, Slocum produced a handgun, chambered a round and pointed it back towards the store and officers before fleeing from the scene.
This brazen act was captured on video and Slocum fled the Fort Wayne area. Officers working in collaboration with the Indiana State Police Department, North Manchester Police Department, and the Fort Wayne Police Department were able to locate Slocum at a trailer in North Manchester along with the suspect vehicle.
The Indiana State Police were able to obtain a search warrant for Slocum’s arrest and with the assistance of the Indiana State Police SWAT team and North Manchester Police Department were able to serve the warrant resulting in Slocum’s arrest, during which shots were fired.
Slocum is facing multiple charges along with an active warrant for his arrest. Fort Wayne Police Department Street Crimes Unit will be following up charging to include the following:
Carrying a Handgun by Serious Violent Felon-Level 4 Felony
Pointing and aiming a Firearm-Level 6 Felony
Resisting Law Enforcement while Drawing a Deadly Weapon-Level 6 Felony
Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon-Level 6 Felony
Intimidation-Level 6 Felony
Indiana State Police released the following on Tuesday:
The Indiana State Police SWAT team was requested to assist in executing a search and arrest warrant at a residence near Wayne Street and State Road 13 in North Manchester, IN. These warrants resulted from an investigation led by the Fort Wayne Police Department.
Just after 3:30 p.m., the Indiana State Police SWAT team arrived at the residence and began making announcements for the occupants to exit the house. The individuals inside failed to comply with the announcements.
The SWAT team continued to employ various tactics in an attempt to get the occupants to exit the residence. During this time, one male exited the house and was taken into custody, but other individuals remained inside and refused to exit.
The SWAT team attempted to make entry, but shots were fired from inside the residence, forcing them to move back from the immediate area. At that time, a female exited the residence and was taken into custody. Jacob S. Slocum, 37, of Fort Wayne, IN, remained inside. Slocum had an active felony warrant out of Allen County, IN, and was also wanted for questioning on an unrelated incident.
ISP negotiators were able to establish communication with Slocum and communicated with him for several hours in an attempt to get him to safely exit the residence. Despite their efforts, the communication was unsuccessful. ISP SWAT then utilized various tactics to locate Slocum inside the residence, where he was found armed with a firearm.
Slocum discharged his firearm in the direction of the troopers. In response, ISP SWAT members discharged their weapons. During the exchange, Slocum sustained injury.
Life-saving measures were immediately initiated, and Slocum was transported by medical helicopter to an area hospital with serious injuries.
No officers were injured in the incident. The trooper(s) involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation. This is standard procedure for the Indiana State Police when an officer is involved in a shooting.
This information is preliminary, and the investigation remains active and ongoing. No further details will be released at this time.
Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be submitted to the Wabash County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
