FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department is investigating an early morning apartment fire that sent one person to the hospital and caused significant damage.
The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Friday at an apartment in the 7000 block of Thamesford Drive, close to Maplecrest and Rothman.
When fire crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from an upstairs bedroom. Initial reports indicated uncertainty about whether all residents had made it out safely. According to fire officials, two individuals escaped the blaze, while a third person was initially unaccounted for. Firefighters searched the unit but did not find anyone else inside.
One individual was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
It took firefighters approximately 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. The apartment sustained extensive damage from fire, smoke, and water.
At this time, it is unknown whether the smoke detectors were operational when the fire started.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department released the following:
FWFD was dispatched to a reported structure fire with possible occupants still inside. FWFD first units were on the scene quickly and began an aggressive fire attack and search of the residence. Two occupants had self evacuated and reported that they were unsure of where the third person that lives there was. The fire was brought under control in twenty minutes and all searches came up negative for anyone still inside. Three Rivers Ambulance Authority did transport x1 for smoke inhalation and Red Cross assistance for two was requested. FWFD was assisted by TRAA, FWPD, NIPSCO, AEP, NCE. The fire remains under investigation.
