BEECH GROVE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A rare Blue Alert was issued Monday night for a suspect who shot two Beech Grove officers.
A Statewide Blue Alert has been declared.
The Indiana State Police has issued a Blue Alert for Kenneth Johnson, wanted for the involvement of injury to an law enforcement officer. Kenneth Johnson is described as a 47 year old black male, 6 foot tall, 165 pounds, brown hair with brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a blue shirt and blue pants. The suspect’s last known location was in Beech Grove, Indiana which is southeast of downtown Indianapolis and was last seen on Monday, February 16, 2026, at 6:00 pm. Kenneth Johnson is believed to be armed and dangerous. If seen, DO NOT APPROACH and contact the Indiana State Police Indianapolis 317-899-8577 or 911.
One of the officers died. He has been identified as 33-year-old Officer Brian Elliott. Indiana State Police say that Johnson fled but was apprehended a short time later.
Governor Mike Braun said Elliott gave his life in the line of duty, and he and his wife, Maureen, are “praying for his family, loved ones, and his brothers and sisters in uniform as they grieve this unimaginable loss.” Kenneth Johnson is the suspect and he was arrested after shooting the two officers. They were shot at an apartment complex near Beech Grove High School, where students were on the premises for after-school activities.
Indiana State Police released the following after cancelling the Blue Alert:
February 16, 2026, just after 6:00 p.m., officers from the Beech Grove Police Department were dispatched to a 911 call of a domestic disturbance in an apartment on Diplomat Court. As officers encountered the subjects involved in the domestic disturbance at the doorway to the apartment a man fired shots at the officers from inside the residence. Two officers sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to an area hospital. Despite life saving efforts, Officer Bryan Elliott succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. The second officer is in stable condition.
The suspect fled the immediate area on foot. For several hours, officers from multiple agencies searched the area. At approximately 10:17 p.m. the suspect was taken into custody by members of the IMPD SWAT Team at a different apartment building in the same area as the incident. The suspect was identified as 47 year old Kenneth T. Johnson.
The investigation into the circumstances of this incident is ongoing, the Indiana State Police is leading the investigation with support from IMPD. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
