INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana lawmakers are getting close to sending a bill to Governor Braun’s desk to require local cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Representative J.D. Prescott of Union City is the sponsor and says the bill would close loopholes in the anti-sanctuary law. Prescott notes Indiana is “not a sanctuary state.” Local governments, public schools, and colleges would be banned from restricting ICE agents or local police from doing immigration enforcement.

UPDATE (February 13, 2026):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana House has passed a bill that Republicans say will reinforce local cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Senate Bill 76, known as “The Fairness Act,” requires local police to fully cooperate with federal ICE agents.
Representative J.D. Prescott of Union City adds it will “ensure we don’t have sanctuary-style policies in Indiana.” The bill is now headed back to the state Senate as the House made amendments that need to be signed off on before going to Governor Braun.

UPDATE (February 4, 2026):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – A bill mandating local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement is now before the full Indiana House. The bill advanced from a five-hour committee meeting by a 9-to-4 vote. More than 60 witnesses testified, with around four-dozen of them opposed to the bill. Senator Liz Brown is the bill’s author and says it “makes it clear to those harboring and encouraging illegal aliens that Indiana will not have its laws ignored.”

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana Senate has approved an immigration enforcement bill by a 37-to-seven vote and sent it to the House. All seven no votes were from Democrats.
Senator Liz Brown of Fort Wayne is backing the legislation, which would expand local cooperation with federal authorities and penalize noncompliance.
