BERNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – One person is injured after being struck by a police car in northeast Indiana. Indiana State Police say it happened in Berne on Saturday.
A Berne police officer was responding to reports of a suspicious person involved in a collision. When arriving at the scene, the police car struck an unconscious person wearing dark clothing lying partially in the road. An investigation is underway.
ISP released the following:
On Saturday, April 11, 2026, just after 10:45 pm, a Berne Police officer responding to a call regarding a suspicious person was involved in a collision with an individual who was lying unconscious in the roadway.
The initial investigation indicates that the individual, who was wearing dark clothing, was lying partially in the roadway on Hendricks St. near Wind Ridge Trail when the officer, who was actively searching for the reported suspicious person, struck the unconscious individual.
As soon as the officer realized what had occurred, the officer immediately requested medical assistance and began providing aid until additional help arrived.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Due to the early stage of the investigation, the identities of both the injured individual and the involved officer are not being released at this time.
