ALLEN CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – The Allen County Sheriff’s Department says one person is dead following a wrong-way crash on Wednesday afternoon. It happened around 1:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes close to the 25-mile marker. Police are still trying to figure out why a Jeep was driving northbound before colliding with a van.
The driver of that work van was taken to the hospital, where they died. The driver of the Jeep was reported to be in serious condition.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Department released the following:
On August 26th, at approximately 1:34 p.m., the Allen County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported personal-injury crash involving a black Jeep and a white work van in the area of I‑469 southbound near the 25.8‑mile marker.
Upon arrival, officers and medics located the crash on southbound I‑469 near the 26‑mile marker. The preliminary investigation indicates that a black Jeep Wrangler was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I‑469, while a white RAM ProMaster 2500 was traveling southbound on I‑469 and was struck head-on by the black Jeep.
The driver of the white RAM ProMaster 2500 was transported to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver of the black Jeep was transported to the hospital in serious condition. It is unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor at this time.
The crash remains under investigation by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
