FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A southeast side home suffered heavy damage in a fire early this morning.
Six people in the Oliver Street home were able to get out safely after flames broke out in the kitchen. It took about 20 minutes to get control of the fire. One person was treated for smoke inhalation.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to the 4000 block of Oliver St. following reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews encountered a small residential house heavily engulfed in flames on the first floor. Thanks to a working smoke detector, the occupants were alerted to the fire in the early morning and successfully evacuated the premises without incident.
Fort Wayne Fire Companies swiftly deployed two handlines and commenced a determined attack on the fire. A thorough search of the home confirmed that no additional occupants were inside.
One adult at the scene experienced smoke inhalation and received immediate treatment before being transported to the hospital. The cause of the fire has been conclusively determined as accidental, arising from unattended cooking, highlighting the critical importance of safety while cooking.
Fort Wayne Fire effectively collaborated with 911 Communications, the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, Neighborhood Code officials, NIPSCO, and AEP to bring the incident under control. The Red Cross also stepped in to provide necessary assistance to the evacuees.
