FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Urban League is kicking off its 2nd Annual Equality for All Sneaker Ball on September 6th at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkview Mirro Center.
This signature event is the premier fundraiser for the organization that raises funds for its many programs and initiatives.
Leading up to the Sneaker Ball, FWUL also kicked off its “Painted Sneakers on Tour.” The organization worked with two area artists, David McClung and Ron Lewis, who each painted a pair of Air Force Ones that are finding their way all around town.
The FW Urban League released the following:
So far, the sneakers have popped up at McMillan Park, Northeast Indiana Innovation Center, the MLK Bridge, and the Pontiac Grocery Store. The sneakers can be followed on FWUL’s social media pages until September 5th.
“The Sneaker Ball adds a little fun to the hard work that the organization does each day & believe it or not, sneakers have rich ties to black culture and social justice initiatives that have affected our communities.
You think of Bill Russel and the Chuck Taylor All Star sneaker or N.W.A and the Nike Cortez sneaker. Bill Russell marched with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and stood with Muhammad Ali while being the best on the court. N.W.A said the lyrics, “the authority to kill a minority” highlighting the police brutality found in poor black and brown communities in the 80’s and 90’s which ignited a younger generation to fight for social justice.” said Aisha R. Arrington, President and CEO.
Fast forward to the last presidential run, Kamala Harris, made the Chuck Taylor All Star ever more relevant. However, the Sneaker Ball is more than sneakers, it’s about the continued fight to create a world where there are no equality gaps.
Tickets are $75 each and sponsorship information can be found on the FWUL WEBSITE
