UPDATE (July 23, 2026):
(ADAMS) – Officials say the confirmed number of cyclosporiasis cases linked to an ongoing outbreak could be higher than 11,000.
The CDC provided a recent update announcing that over 4,000 cases have been linked to the outbreak across 41 states.
According to officials, “many of the additional cases have been reported by Michigan and Ohio.”
Still, the FDA maintains that while dozens of states are impacted, the outbreak investigation has been predominantly linked to “at least” five states: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. Other states such as North Carolina and Kansas have also seen a recent spike in cases.
Cyclosporiasis cases are typically reported between May and August each year, but it is usually only a handful or a few dozen.

UPDATE (July 17, 2026):
CHICAGO (ADAMS) – A multi-state outbreak of cyclosporiasis is causing widespread concern, so health experts are offering tips on reducing the risk.
Dr. Emily Landon, an infection prevention expert at the University of Chicago Medicine, recommends avoiding fast food chains right now if you’re immunocompromised or have gut health issues.
She says eating at home or at local smaller restaurants is safer. Washing all fruits and vegetables under running water is important before eating, cutting, or cooking. Leafy lettuce, especially bagged lettuce, is suspected in the current “explosive diarrhea” outbreak. Buying whole lettuce and peeling off the two outer layers, she says, is a safer option.
