Community-funded AED program saves a life in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Allen County Fire & EMS District says that a community-funded AED program has proved life-saving in New Haven.

Last week, according to officials, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in a local patrol car enabled a New Haven Police Officer to revive a worker in sudden cardiac arrest before an ambulance could arrive.

 A collaborative community safety initiative proved its life-saving value
Friday when a quick response by the New Haven Police Department (NHPD) helped revive a
worker suffering from cardiac arrest.

On August 28, 2026, East Central Fire/EMS Territory was dispatched to Sanko Gosei
following reports of an unconscious, non-breathing worker. NHPD officers arrived on the
scene prior to the arrival of East Central EMS personnel. Officer Pope immediately
deployed the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from his patrol vehicle, administered
one shock, and performed CPR until paramedic crews took over care.

A short time later, the patient regained a pulse and was transported to a local hospital for
continued treatment, with a return to baseline expected.

The AED utilized by Officer Pope was recently placed in service thanks to local businesses
that provided donations to fund AED purchases for NHPD vehicles. Studies show that early
CPR and rapid defibrillation are critical factors in surviving sudden cardiac arrest.

“In cardiac arrest emergencies, every second counts,” said Julie Ehle, EMS Training Captain
for East Central Fire and EMS Territory. “This patient’s outcome demonstrates the direct
impact of our business community’s support. Equipping law enforcement officers—who
are often first to arrive on scene—with AEDs saves lives.”
