INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana Supreme Court is looking into religious exemptions to the state’s near-total abortion ban.
The Indiana Attorney General’s Office is asking justices to dismiss a religious freedom challenge to the ban and say women who aren’t pregnant or seeking an abortion brought their case too soon.
Marion Superior Court Judge Christina Klineman issued a ruling in March permanently barring the state from enforcing the ban against two anonymous women, saying denying an abortion would substantially burden their exercise of religion.
The argument before the court centered around the 2022 abortion ban and the 2015 Religious Freedom Restoration Act, with that limiting when the government can “substantially burden” someone’s religious exercise.
